Modern Arnis was founded by Grand Master/Professor Remy Presas. Arnis is sometimes called Escrima (Spanish for skirmish) or Kali (an abbreviation for Indonesian fencing). Professor Presas studied his grandfather’s stick art in the Philippines and then studied under many other Arnis masters.

Modern Arnis blends various schools together and changes how the fighting method is learned. In the past, it was customary to strike the opponent's hand as you would in real combat, since the cane was considered sacred. Modern Arnis strikes the stick unless training with special equipment. It uses a good deal of jujitsu techniques with and without a weapon to control the opponent in joint locks and take-downs. In addition, we practice empty hand boxing and techniques from other martials arts such as kicking. Besides working with the empty hands, kicking, joint locks and sticks, Arnis also uses Bolo swords and daggers. Learning this system builds speed and control plus the understanding of how to use and defend against modern tools such as a baseball bat, an umbrella, a knife, a golf club, or a handbag.
